Abstract

Objective: To identify risk factors associated with gestational diabetes in pregnant women attended at Hospital Mario Catarino Rivas during the period 2024–2025.

Materials and methods: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 370 pregnant women were included through non-probabilistic consecutive sampling. Sociodemographic, clinical, and obstetric variables were collected from medical records. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed to identify associations between risk factors and gestational diabetes.

Results: A high frequency of gestational diabetes was observed among the studied population. The most frequent factors in patients with gestational diabetes were maternal age over 30 years, rural origin, multiparity, and inadequate prenatal care. Additionally, a higher frequency of family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus and comorbidities such as preeclampsia was identified.

Conclusions: Gestational diabetes is associated with multiple sociodemographic and clinical factors in the studied population. Early identification of these factors may strengthen screening strategies and improve timely management, contributing to the reduction of maternal and fetal complications.
